Moodle 2.0 Preview 4 Release Notes

Moodle 2.0 is on the home stretch! According to the most recent preview release (part four of the five-part series), Moodle 2.0 is "improving rapidly," but still requires quite a bit of polishing.

Nonetheless, many new features have taken shape. The preview 4 release notes outline many of the notable improvements since the last preview, including:
  • New enrolments plug-in system
  • New interface for assignment grading
  • Improved interfaces for community hub interactions
  • The Moodle.org Open Community Hub has been branded, MOOCH.
  • Improvements to the folder module.
  • New Themes
  • Layout Issues Fixed
  • Over 100 Bugs Fixed
I wanted to draw some addition to the improvements listed in the preview 4 release notes that are going to make a particularly large impact on users when Moodle 2.0 is released.

The Moodle Community Hub, now called MOOCH, will allow users to register their existing site with the hub:
  • Teachers on registered sites can publish their full courses to Community Hubs for download by others.
  • Teachers on registered sites can also advertise their courses on Community Hubs for people to join.
  • Teachers on any site can search all public Community Hubs and download courses as templates for their own courses.
  • Users on any Moodle site can also search Community Hubs for courses (and communities of practice) to participate in.

Additionally, Moodle is making a great effort to drastically improve the quality of their stock interfaces for grading assignments and for the MOOCH Community Hub, which you can test drive here.

For more info on MOOCH, visit our post here that outlines its merits.

In addition to interface improvements, Moodle is pulling community-based creativity to improve the selection of stock interfaces that will be available with the Moodle 2.0 download. The video below outlines how to change you current Moodle theme. Maybe it can help you in the process of submitting a new Moodle theme for the contest, where the winner will be awarded with a brand new iPad:

Stay tuned for commentary on the next and final Moodle preview 5 release notes.
