What's New in joule 2: File System

For the past couple of weeks, we've been highlighting the brand new features in joule 2, our enterprise e-Learning platform based on Moodle 2. In case you missed any of the posts on the new features and functionality, check them out below:
Today, we wanted to focus on one of the foundational changes introduced in Moodle 2- the file system. In Moodle 1.9 (and all previous versions), when publishing a file as a resource, users could:
  • Upload it to their course files area along with all the other files they intend to use in the course
  • Add a resource to the course
  • And, select the desired file from the course files
Now, the file system is a database centric model, where file management is handled through the database. Here's a review of the changes to the file system in Moodle 2:
  1. The "Course Files" tool has been eliminated
  2. "Linking" versus "Copying"
  3. System Administrator File Access
  4. Repository Support
  5. Overwriting of existing files has changed
For a full report of Moodle 2's file system changes, we've created "The Moodle 2 File System Explained," a document that provides comprehensive info on all the changes, as well as the benefits that users will gain from these changes.
In the future, as the file system evolves, we'll keep you all up to date with enhancements to the file system functionality. If you have further questions about Moodlerooms or joule 2, check out a full list of our FAQs, head over to our joule 2 page, or shoot an email to feedback@moodlerooms.com.
