What's New in joule 2: Rubrics

Last week, we highlighted Moodlerooms' Personalized Learning Designer (PLD), one of the major new features available in joule 2, the newest iteration of our enterprise e-Learning platform based on open-source Moodle 2. In case you didn't see the announcement, check it out here. Today, we're focusing on Rubrics in joule 2.

Generally, a rubric is a scoring tool for subjective assessments. It is a set of criteria used to assess a student's performance on papers, projects, and essays. A rubric allows for standardized scoring according to specified criteria, making grading simpler and more transparent.

Rubrics in joule 2
  • Ease of Grading – Instructors can create their own rubrics (with their own criteria and grading guidelines). Considering they are constructed as “checklists” or “scales,” instructors can use the “Click to Score” functionality, which enables instructors to move through grading quickly and easily. By simply clicking the grid, the score is automatically calculated.
  • Consistency – Subjective assignments (papers, essays, etc.) are graded according to consistent criteria and levels of mastery. Once rubrics have been created, they can be reused through the course or exported/imported into different courses.
  • Transparency – Instructors can share the rubric with the students, both before and after grading, to add transparency to the assignment and to the grading process. When instructors are grading assignments using rubrics, the instructor may (optionally) provide specific notes for criteria or overall. These notes are saved with the grade and are available to the student.
Stay tuned next week when we highlight joule 2's new user interface and folder view course format.
