Back in August of this year, during the Austin, TX, Moodle Moot, we had the opportunity to organize a panel of academic technology specialists to discuss institutions' evaluation open-source as a solution. Moderated by Timothy Cooper, Director of Global Education Solutions for Dell, the panel was comprised of:
- David Levin: Senior Director of Academic Technology for California State University Northridge.
- Patrick Masson: Chief Technology Officer for UMass Online.
- Keith Lynip: Director of Extended Learning Services for the University of Montana.
Due to the Moot's overall Moodle emphasis, the conversation between panelists and attendees, at times, seemed to focused on the question of proprietary versus open-source learning management systems rather than general campus-wide solutions. However, the larger discussion was about institutional governance and best practices for evaluating, adopting, implementing and ultimately maintaining open-source solutions on today's campuses.
Over the next few weeks, we'll be recapping the many conversations that occurred during the panel discussion and posing questions based on those conversations.
Most of all, we'd love to hear your stories of open-source adoption. How was the evaluation process? What were the immediate successes and what were the difficulties?
Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned in the coming weeks.
